Energy Price Cap 2026 – What You Need to Know

⚠️ July 2026 alert: Ofgem confirmed on 27 May 2026 that the price cap rises to £1,850/yr from 1 July — up £209 (+13%) due to rising wholesale gas prices. The £50 referral credit is now worth even more as a buffer against higher bills. Intelligent Octopus Go at 8p/kWh overnight remains the most effective protection for EV owners.

The current (April–June 2026) Ofgem price cap is £1,641/yr for a typical dual-fuel household. From 1 July 2026, this rises to £1,850/yr — an increase of £209 driven by higher wholesale gas costs linked to Middle East supply tensions. Octopus Energy passes cap changes on in full for Flexible Octopus customers.

The best protection against rising bills is a smart tariff. Intelligent Octopus Go customers charging at 8p/kWh overnight are already paying around a third of the standard variable rate — the July cap rise doesn’t change that overnight rate. See our full July 2026 price cap guide for unit rates, standing charges, and what it means for your bills.

Everything you need to know about the Octopus Energy refer a friend and recommend a friend scheme for 2026.

What is the Intelligent Octopus Go rate from April 2026?

From 1 April 2026, Intelligent Octopus Go's smart charging rate drops from 11.5p/kWh to just 8p/kWh – up to 67% cheaper than the standard Flexible Octopus day rate. That makes it one of the cheapest EV charging deals available anywhere in the UK.

On top of the cheap EV charging rate, you also get cheap energy for your whole home every night between 11:30pm and 5:30am. Octopus also now supports Andersen A2 EV home chargers on this tariff.

Switch to Octopus using my referral link and we both get £50 credit – you can then apply for Intelligent Octopus Go once you're a customer and have a compatible smart charger.

What is the Ofgem price cap for July 2026?

Ofgem confirmed on 27 May 2026 that the energy price cap rises to £1,850/yr from 1 July 2026 — up £209 (+13%) from the current April–June cap of £1,641/yr. The increase is driven by rising wholesale gas prices. If you’re on Octopus’s Flexible Octopus tariff, the new higher rates will apply automatically from 1 July.

Switching via my referral link means you get £50 credit to offset the rise. And if you have an EV, Intelligent Octopus Go at 8p/kWh overnight is still far cheaper than the standard variable rate — the cap rise doesn’t affect that overnight smart rate.

Do Octopus Energy offer discounts, student discount or NHS Blue Light Card discount?

Octopus Energy don't currently offer a student discount, NHS Blue Light Card discount or any other promotional discount code. However, the best way to save money when signing up is via a referral link – use mine and we both get £50 credit added to our accounts after your first Direct Debit. That's the closest thing to a discount Octopus offer, and it's available to everyone regardless of age or profession. For the full answer on the Blue Light Card question, see our Octopus Energy Blue Light discount page.

What is the Octopus Energy referral code for 2026?

The Octopus Energy referral link for 2026 is share.octopus.energy/brave-kiwi-22. Click it — don’t type it — and you’ll receive £50 credit after your first Direct Debit payment, and so will the referrer. There’s no separate code to enter; the link does everything.

How do I claim my £50 Octopus Energy referral credit?

Click the referral link share.octopus.energy/brave-kiwi-22 and complete your switch online. After your first Direct Debit, £50 is automatically added to your account. No manual claiming needed.

Do I need to type a code or click a link?

The referral is tracked via the link click, so the easiest way is to use the button on this page. If you type the URL directly into your browser rather than clicking through, the £50 credit won’t be triggered for either of us — so it’s worth making sure you click rather than type.

How long does the £50 Octopus referral credit take to arrive?

The £50 credit typically arrives 2–3 weeks after your first Direct Debit payment. Both you and the referrer receive it at the same time.

Does the Octopus referral credit expire?

No. Octopus referral credits don’t expire as long as you remain a customer. The credit sits in your account and automatically reduces your future bills.

Can I use the Octopus referral if I’m renting?

Yes — if you pay your own energy bills (rather than your landlord including utilities in your rent), you can switch to Octopus and claim the £50 referral credit.

Is Octopus Energy worth switching to in 2026?

Yes. Octopus has been the Which? Best Buy energy supplier seven times (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025), holds an Excellent 4.8★ Trustpilot rating from 500,000+ reviews, offers 100% renewable electricity, and has never charged the full Ofgem price cap. With bills set to rise to £1,850/yr in July 2026, switching to Octopus and getting £50 referral credit — plus access to smart tariffs that undercut standard rates — is one of the most effective ways to manage the increase.

What is the Octopus Energy business referral reward?

£75 credit each — £150 split in total. My referral link covers both residential and business switching. Use the same link: share.octopus.energy/brave-kiwi-22 and select the business quote option on the Octopus page.

Will my energy supply be interrupted when switching to Octopus?

No. The same physical infrastructure delivers your energy — only the billing company changes. Switching typically completes within 5 working days and Octopus handles everything with your old supplier.

Can I get a special tariff for my heat pump or electric car with Octopus?

Yes. Octopus offers Cosy Octopus for heat pumps (save up to £389/yr, 3 cheap windows daily) and Intelligent Octopus Go for EVs (8p/kWh overnight charging from April 2026). Both are available after joining via the referral link.

What is Intelligent Octopus Go and can I get it via referral?

Intelligent Octopus Go is Octopus’s smart EV tariff: 8p/kWh overnight from 1 April 2026 (11:30pm–5:30am), down from 11.5p/kWh and versus 24.67p standard variable. It’s the UK’s most popular EV tariff — over 50% of smart EV tariff customers. Switch via the referral link and request the tariff change in your Octopus account.

What is Cosy Octopus and is it good for heat pumps?

Cosy Octopus is Octopus’s smart tariff for heat pump homes, offering three cheap windows daily: 04:00–07:00, 13:00–16:00, and 22:00–00:00. It saves up to £389/yr versus the standard variable tariff. Avoid running your heat pump during peak hours (16:00–19:00). A SMETS2 smart meter is required. No exit fees, no tie-in.

What is the Ofgem price cap from April 2026?

From 1 April 2026, Ofgem has set the energy price cap at £1,641 per year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. That is around £117, or 7%, lower than the current cap level. The cap applies to the unit rates and standing charges Ofgem allows suppliers to charge – it doesn't cap your total bill, which still depends on how much energy you actually use.

Will my energy bills go up in July 2026?

Yes — for most households on standard variable tariffs, bills will rise from July 2026. Ofgem has confirmed the price cap increases by £209/yr (+13%) to £1,850/yr from 1 July, driven by higher wholesale gas prices. If you are on Flexible Octopus, your rates will rise automatically from 1 July. If you are on a fixed tariff, your rate stays the same until your fix ends.

The most effective ways to reduce the impact: switch to Octopus via my referral link to get £50 credit, and consider a smart tariff if you have an EV (Intelligent Octopus Go, 8p/kWh overnight) or heat pump (Cosy Octopus).

What is the electricity unit rate from April 2026?

Under the April 2026 Ofgem price cap, the typical electricity unit rate is around 24.50p/kWh and the standing charge is around 61p/day, though exact figures vary slightly by region. If you switch to Octopus Energy and sign up to Intelligent Octopus Go, you can charge your EV at just 8p/kWh overnight from 1 April 2026 — around 67% cheaper than the standard Flexible Octopus day rate.

What is the gas unit rate from April 2026?

Under the April 2026 Ofgem price cap, the typical gas unit rate is around 6.24p/kWh and the standing charge is around 31p/day, though exact figures vary by region. Octopus Energy passes on these reductions in full for customers on its Flexible Octopus standard variable tariff from 1 April 2026.

Is Octopus Energy cheaper than the price cap?

Octopus Energy's standard Flexible Octopus tariff is priced at or below the Ofgem price cap – Octopus has stated that its standard prices have always been at or below the cap. On top of that, smart tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go can be significantly cheaper for households with an EV or flexible usage – smart charging at 8p/kWh from April 2026 is around 67% cheaper than the standard Flexible Octopus day rate. Switch using my referral link and we both get £50 credit.

How much will I save switching to Octopus Energy in April 2026?

Savings depend on your usage and current supplier. Switching to Octopus's Flexible Octopus tariff puts you at or below the April 2026 price cap of £1,641/yr for a typical home. On top of that, you get £50 credit added to your account after your first Direct Debit via my referral link. If you have an EV and move to Intelligent Octopus Go, your overnight charging rate drops to 8p/kWh from April 2026 — saving a typical EV driver around £417/yr compared to charging at standard rates.

Are standing charges changing in April 2026?

Yes, slightly. From April 2026, Ofgem is adjusting how some policy costs are allocated – some charges that were previously recovered through the daily standing charge are moving into the unit rate instead. This means standing charges may fall a little for some customers, while unit rates adjust in the other direction. Ofgem is also running a trial with a small number of suppliers, potentially including Octopus, to test low or zero standing charge tariffs. Details on those trial tariffs are still emerging and this page will be updated when Octopus confirms its offering.

Is now a good time to switch energy supplier?

Yes — and the July 2026 price cap rise makes it more urgent. With bills set to increase by £209/yr from 1 July, switching to Octopus now means you get £50 credit before the rise hits. Smart tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go (8p/kWh overnight for EV owners) give you a far cheaper rate than the standard cap — your smart charging rate doesn’t rise with the July cap.

Octopus has never charged the full Ofgem price cap since launch and has been named Which? Best Buy seven times. Switching takes around five minutes online.
