Before You Start: One Important Thing

You must click the referral link — do not type the URL directly. The £50 credit only triggers when you arrive at the Octopus sign-up page via a referral link. If you type octopus.energy into your browser directly, the referral won’t register and neither of us gets the credit. Use the button on this page to make sure it works.

How to Switch to Octopus Energy: Step by Step

  1. Click the referral link

Hit the green button above or below — it takes you directly to the Octopus sign-up page with the referral already attached. You’ll see a confirmation that the referral is active.

  2. Enter your postcode and current energy details

Octopus will ask for your postcode, current supplier, and an estimate of your usage (or your meter serial number if you have it handy). You can use a rough annual usage estimate if you don’t have your bills to hand — it doesn’t need to be exact.

  3. Choose your tariff

Octopus will show you available tariffs. Most customers start on Flexible Octopus — a fair variable tariff that tracks the Ofgem price cap. If you have a heat pump or EV, you can also apply for Cosy Octopus or Intelligent Octopus Go after joining (a smart meter is required for those).

  4. Set up your Direct Debit

Octopus will ask for your bank details to set up a monthly Direct Debit. This is standard for all energy suppliers. Your first Direct Debit is the trigger for the £50 referral credit to be applied.

  5. Octopus contacts your old supplier — you do nothing

Once you’ve signed up, Octopus handles the entire switch. They notify your current supplier and manage the changeover. You do not need to cancel your old supplier yourself — Octopus does it for you. The switch typically completes within 3 weeks.

  6. £50 credit lands in your account

Approximately 2–3 weeks after your first Direct Debit is taken, £50 credit is applied to your Octopus account automatically. You’ll get an email notification. The same credit goes to me as the referrer.

Common Concerns About Switching Energy

Will my energy be cut off? No. The switch is entirely administrative. Your electricity and gas continue without interruption throughout the process. You won’t notice any difference to your supply.

Do I need to call my current supplier? No. Octopus handles all communication with your existing supplier. You just sign up online and Octopus does the rest — no cancellation calls needed.

What if I’m in a fixed contract? Check whether your current tariff has exit fees — these vary by supplier and tariff. Octopus has no exit fees on its variable tariffs, but your old supplier may charge to leave a fixed deal early. It’s worth checking this before switching, though for many people the savings still outweigh the exit fee.

What Happens to Your Old Meter Reading?

On your switch date, you should take a meter reading and submit it to both your old supplier and Octopus. This ensures you’re billed accurately up to the point of changeover. Octopus will prompt you to submit a reading around switch time — they send a reminder so you won’t miss it.

If you have a smart meter, readings are taken automatically and you don’t need to do anything manually.

Do You Need a Smart Meter?

No — you do not need a smart meter to switch to Octopus Energy or to claim the £50 referral credit. You can join on the standard Flexible Octopus tariff with a traditional meter.

If you’d like to access smart tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go (for EVs) or Cosy Octopus (for heat pumps), a SMETS2 smart meter is required. Octopus can arrange a free installation — you can request this after joining.
